POSTER  TITLE: Memory and psychedelics

Memory is our fundamental adaptive feature – an indicative of human evolution. It allows us not only to retrieve and revive past events but also to plan future actions and depict possible outcomes based on our previous experience. A psychedelic experience is a spectacular event that remains embedded in our brains for a lifetime. The first ‘trip’ has been reported to be in the top life changing events of an individual’s life. It is already well known that psychedelics have left a mark on human evolution, the main hypotheses being based around consciousness expansion. A key question not very frequently asked is to what extent do psychedelic drugs affect our memory. Scientists have previously touched on the importance of serotonin receptors’ contribution to the physiological and pharmacological basis of memory, while assessing their therapeutic implications. Moreover, questions regarding the nature of the informational input/output during the psychedelic experience arose. Could one experience be enough to produce such behavioral changes to cure drug addiction and post traumatic stress disorder? This presentation will provide insight into the biological basis of memory and how psychedelic drugs affect our brains both structurally and psychologically. Future directions regarding psychedelics therapeutic potential are to be provided as well.
